On November 30, 2023, the chemical manufacturers Corteva, Du Pont de Nemours, and the Chemours Company reached a settlement agreement with the state of Ohio for $110 million, which is meant to resolve the claims associated with the release of PFAS from the companies' facilities. While the Chemours Company would be responsible for half of the settlement costs and Du Pont de Nemours would pay $39 million, Corteva is expected to cover the rest.
In February 2024, the North Carolina Business Court made a decision that would assist the North Carolina Department of Justice in the ongoing fight to protect residents' access to clean, safe water. According to the decision, if old Du Pont de Nemours is found responsible for contaminating natural resources with PFAS, the new company and Corteva can also be held financially liable for the damage. "Companies cannot engage in corporate shell games to avoid liability for the messes they make," said Attorney General Josh Stein.
On April 10, 2024, the office of Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita filed a lawsuit on behalf of the state against 22 chemical manufacturers, including Corteva, claiming that they were aware of the health risks of PFAS exposure. The office is alleging that the companies knew of the serious impact "forever chemicals" were having on Indiana's drinking water and natural resources.
