Reactive airway dysfunction syndrome - 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund claims video

The 9/11 attacks were a horrific tragedy that claimed thousands of lives. It also had a devastating impact on the health of many who were present at the affected sites. Emergency responders, recovery workers, and nearby residents were exposed to a toxic cloud of substances. The mix included asbestos, lead, and jet fuel. Recent studies have shown a link between this exposure and the development of chronic health conditions, including reactive airway dysfunction syndrome.

If you were present at the World Trade Center or the New York City Exposure Zone and have since been diagnosed with reactive airway dysfunction syndrome, you may be eligible for compensation.

9/11 responders and survivors are at risk of reactive airway dysfunction syndrome

RADS is a condition similar to asthma that can develop after exposure to irritants, like the harmful chemicals and fumes present in the 9/11 dust cloud. Unlike asthma, RADS isn't triggered by allergies. Common symptoms include:

  • persistent coughing
  • wheezing
  • chest tightness
  • difficult breathing
  • throat swelling
  • burning sensation in the nose and throat
  • rapid heart rate

9/11 VCF payout for reactive airway dysfunction syndrome

If you were exposed to the toxic dust from the 9/11 attacks and have since developed RADS, you might be eligible to receive compensation from the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund. The amount you get is calculated based on a formula that considers your pain and suffering, medical expenses, and lost income, minus any other money you've received for your injuries. For respiratory illnesses, the maximum payout is $90,000, but the actual amount depends on how severe your condition is. In 2021, the VCF gave nearly $1.5 billion to almost 10,000 people who qualified. In rare cases with multiple or serious illnesses, compensation could go up to $325,000.
