9/11 toxins: pulverized concrete

9/11 toxins: pulverized concrete video

On September 11, 2001, the crumbling of the Twin Towers dispersed pulverized concrete into the air. The giant cloud of crushed concrete carried toxic materials like silica, heavy metals, and other hazardous substances, which posed serious health threats to those nearby. First responders and residents had no choice but to ingest and inhale the fumes, dust, and debris during and after the 9/11 attacks.

For those exposed, the health effects did not immediately manifest as illnesses. However, the presence of toxic particles in pulverized concrete had lasting consequences years after the terrorist attack. Pulverized concrete has been associated with severe respiratory diseases, chronic conditions, and various forms of cancer. These diseases are now part of the horrendous legacy of 9/11.

Health risks of exposure to pulverized concrete

Due to the ultra-fine particles that linger in the exposure zone for weeks after the terrorist attacks, both first responders and civilians experience prolonged exposure. This allows the particles to penetrate deeper into the respiratory system and bloodstream, causing long-term damage.

Research on the hazards of cement and concrete dust reveals that crushed concrete contains the following agents:

  • Crystalline silica
  • Silicon
  • Aluminum
  • Cadmium
  • Chromium

Inhalation and ingestion of these elements can deeply penetrate the lungs and cause scarring and inflammation. On top of that, the International Agency for Research on Cancer lists crystalline silica as a carcinogen and is linked to the development of lung cancer.

Inhaling silica dust from pulverized concrete can also increase the risk of developing silicosis, kidney disease, and even other types of cancer (bladder and kidney cancer).
