How microscopic glass shards cause diseases

Microscopic glass shards are unique hazards because of their sharp and abrasive shape. These tiny particles can enter the respiratory tract with ease and cause damage to the airways. This results in damaged tissues and inflammation.

Once microscopic glass shards reach deeper into the lungs, these foreign objects can scar lung tissue and cause long-term damage. If the body already has pre-existing conditions, the presence of these particles in the system can cause infections, more damage, or even more health complications over time.

A case report on WTC responders exposed to dust and smoke caused by the terrorist attacks found that microscopic shards of glass, along with other toxic elements in the air, contributed to the development of lung-related diseases, such as:

• Asthma
• Interstitial lung disease
• Chronic rhinosinusitis
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
• Reactive airway dysfunction syndrome (RADS)

While microscopic glass particles are not classified as carcinogens, their ability to damage tissues can lead to cell mutation. This leads to higher chances of developing lung and bronchial cancer. Apart from these respiratory-related illnesses, microscopic glass shards also caused eye and soft tissue injuries to those present in and around Ground Zero.
