Health issues related to cement dust exposure

Cement dust contains crystalline silica as well as other elements, namely aluminum, calcium, chromium, iron, and silicon. Of all these components, crystalline silica is the most dangerous.

Thousands of individuals inhaled and ingested high concentrations of cement dust for nearly three months following the destruction of the Twin Towers. Over time, the fine particles of cement can lead to scarring and damage in the respiratory system.

A research paper about the health hazards of cement dust, says that contact with cement dust can lead to the following cancers and diseases:

• asthma
• lung cancer
• colorectal cancer
• head and neck cancers
• gastric cancer
• chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

While the inhalation of cement dust does predominately affect the lungs, these particles can still enter the bloodstream to wreak havoc on other organs. Cement dust can also harm the bones, heart, liver, and muscles.
