9/11 toxins: calcite

Calcite is a key ingredient of building materials like cement and concrete. Upon impact of the plane to the Twin Towers, calcite was one of the harmful substances that covered the sky.

While calcite isn't as toxic as other substances found at Ground Zero, it can still become a health risk when broken down into fine dust particles. These tiny particles became airborne immediately after the attacks, affecting around 400,000 people who breathed in the toxic air.

As a foreign substance that enters the body, calcite can cause damage by scarring the lungs. In turn, this can result in the fibrosis and inflammation of the lungs. While it is not classified as a cancer-causing substance, calcite dust may still elevate the chances of developing lung and bronchial cancer.
