The study followed about 2,500 people who developed asthma after the 9/11 attacks. Ten years later, roughly two-thirds of these individuals still reported asthma symptoms that disrupt their daily lives. The study found a strong link between severe, persistent asthma and mental health conditions like PTSD. Additionally, gastroesophageal reflux and sleep apnea were also associated with asthma symptoms. Common symptoms of asthma include:

  • shortness of breath
  • wheezing
  • sudden coughing fits
  • chest tightness
  • chest pain
  • sleep disturbances due to shortness of breath, cough/wheezing

For many in the 9/11 community, these symptoms are worsened by activities like exercise, exposure to certain chemicals, and seasonal allergies.
