9/11 toxins: asbestos
When the World Trade Center collapsed after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, it filled the air with toxic dust and debris. The contaminated air carried countless harmful substances, including asbestos, which was used in the construction of the Twin Towers. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fiber, popular for its fire and heat-resistant properties. For decades, many used it for the insulation and fireproofing of various establishments, as well as the Twin Towers. The fall of the towers exposed thousands of first responders, workers, and civilians to the hazardous asbestos.
As of 2024, different kinds of asbestos have been banned in the United States. While this is good news for the people of today, those exposed to asbestos after 9/11 are still experiencing its long-term effects on the human body. Those affected are at high risk of various cancers, respiratory disorders, and other serious illnesses.
