When the fibers become detached, they start floating in the air, posing a threat to anyone near them. The workers handling the products that are secured and wrapped in these materials risk inhaling the particles of asbestos spread around.

PRODUCT USE

1907 - 1984 (77 years)

This product was made in order to secure and protect equipment that needed to be moved around. Sometimes, harsh weather conditions with extreme temperatures were met along the way. Asbestos fibers were added in the making of packing materials for strengthening and making them more resistant to external damage. Chrysotile (white asbestos) was the type of asbestos preferred for this.

The risk of asbestos exposure was relatively low if packing materials were left intact. With time, the material would start getting frayed, releasing asbestos particles when the packing material would get handled. You could have been exposed if:

  • You handled asbestos packing material constantly
  • You found yourself working in old factories or plants
  • You transported industrial equipment or merchandise before the 1980’s
