Asbestos adhesives

Years after they were applied, these adhesives start falling apart and when the workers scrape them up, the asbestos particles inside get disturbed and become airborne, making it very easy for the worker to inhale them.

PRODUCT USE

1906 - 1986 (80 years)

Asbestos was used in proportion of up to 25 percent in adhesive materials, as it created a stronger bond to a wider range of surfaces and was able to withstand extreme temperatures.

The toxicity of asbestos adhesives was relatively low as they were applied, but once the layers that were bonded by it needed removal, the adhesive would get damaged, releasing its fibers around the worker. You could have been exposed if:

  • You found yourself on construction sites where asbestos adhesives were used
  • You worked directly with asbestos adhesives
  • You made contact with materials that once were bonded with asbestos adhesive
  • You performed demolition work
