Victims who were diagnosed with cancer linked to 9/11 may be eligible to receive a payout of $90,000 to $250,000 through the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF).

The total VCF payout depends on the cancer type and severity

Each case is unique, and each cancer diagnosis varies from person to person. With this in mind, different types of cancer and their impact on the person may influence the VCF settlement an individual may receive. Here’s an overview of the compensation limits for the numerous types of cancer covered by the 9/11 VCF:

  • Prostate cancer: The minimum payout for prostate cancer is $200,000. However, this may increase to $250,000 if there is solid medical evidence of permanent complications, metastasis, or disease recurrence.
  • Skin cancer (non-melanoma): VCF awards are usually only up to $90,000.
  • Melanoma skin cancer and other types of cancer: compensation may be as high as $250,000.

The following are the kinds of cancer diagnoses that may qualify a 9/11 victim for financial assistance under the 9/11 VCF:

Some victims of the 9/11 events may have developed multiple cancers or may have severe co-existing conditions on top of cancer. The U.S. government recognizes these cases and has mandated that people suffering from several serious health conditions may receive a VCF settlement of up to $340,000.

Furthermore, if a victim receives a VCF payout for one type of cancer but later develops another form of cancer, they may be awarded additional compensation. Each subsequent diagnosis may, again, qualify for a VCF settlement of up to $250,000. This is based on the Reauthorized Zadroga Act.
