The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has the authority to regulate PFAS through the Toxic Substances Control Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, and other regulatory authorities.

The current safe exposure limit for PFOS and PFOA is 70 parts per trillion

On June 15, 2022, the EPA released updated health advisories, warning that even small amounts of PFOS and PFOA are harmful to humans. The previous guideline set a limit of 70 ppt for PFOS and PFOA. However, the new advisories decrease that by over a thousandfold. The new limit for PFOS is 0.02 ppt, while for PFOA, it is 0.004 ppt. Essentially, the agency wants the limits to be as close to zero as possible, as a growing body of research has shown how toxic these chemicals are.

As for PFAS in the fire suppressant AFFF, in the fall of the same year, the Pentagon announced that military firefighters would start using PFAS-free firefighting foam in 2024. The process of switching to a safe and effective replacement will cascade through civilian airports, fire departments, oil refineries, and chemical manufacturers. It is a radical change for the U.S. military, which since the Vietnam War has relied on PFAS-containing AFFF to fight its toughest fires.
