A short history of UTC Fire & Security America's Corp., AFFF manufacturing, and lawsuits
On January 16, 2024, New Hanover County filed a lawsuit against 27 companies making or selling materials containing PFAS, including UTC Fire & Security America's Corp. These highly dangerous chemicals have contaminated the region's air, groundwater, and surface water for years, according to county officials. Moreover, they added that the lawsuit's purpose is to hold the AFFF manufacturers accountable for negligence and claim the companies had knowingly discharged the chemicals into the environment, in some cases for over five decades. Furthermore, in the winter of 2024, a federal lawsuit was filed against several manufacturers of AFFF, which was used at the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport by San Luis Obispo County. One of the companies listed as a defendant in this lawsuit is UTC Fire & Security America's Corp. After PFAS were found at the airport in 2019, the county and Cal Fire entered a cleanup agreement with the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board to address the impact of PFAS around the airport.
