As a veteran, your risk of developing a serious disease as a consequence of exposure to asbestos is very high, as the hazardous mineral was present in tremendous amounts in every military branch, but especially in Navy ships during the last century.
The military is notorious for having employed asbestos to a tremendous extent between 1920 and 1980, as the mineral has numerous convenient properties, such as resistance to fire, and was also very cheap. As a consequence, over 20 million people were exposed to asbestos during the last century, 30% of whom are struggling with terrible diseases today.
